Zweigelt
Zweigelt is a black grape variety used for red and rosé wine production. It is a cross between Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent that is believed to originally come from Austria. It is an early-budding and mid-ripening grape variety with medium-sized, compact bunches and berries of small to medium size. It is susceptible to powdery (oidium) mildew. Zweigelt is often produced as a monovarietal wine, but is also used in blends with different grape varieties. Classic blending partners are Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels.
