Trebbiano Toscano / Ugni Blanc
Trebbiano Toscano is a white grape variety used for still dry and sweet wine production. It is believed to originally come from Tuscany (Italy) and is a member of the Trebbiano group. It is a late-budding and mid-ripening grape variety with relatively big bunches and medium-sized berries. It is susceptible to downy mildew, but relatively resistant to powdery mildew (oidium) and botrytis bunch rot (grey mold). Trebbiano Toscano can produce monovarietal wines, but is typically used in blends with many different grape varieties. A classic blending partner in sweet Vin Santo is Malvasia Bianca Lunga. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in stainless steel tanks; for Vin Santo fermentation and maturation take place in small oak barrels.
