Schiava Grossa
Schiava Grossa is a black grape variety most commonly used for red wine production. It is believed to originally come from Alto Adige (Italy). It is a member of the Schiava group. It is a mid- to late-ripening grape variety with medium-sized bunches and berries that are medium to large in size. It is susceptible to downy and powdery (oidium) mildews, although winter-frost resistant. Schiava Grossa can be produced as a monovarietal wine, but is often used in blends. A classic blending partner is Lagrein. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in stainless steel tanks or oak vats.
