Muscat of Alexandria / Zibibbo
Muscat of Alexandria is a white grape variety used for sparkling, still, dry, sweet and fortified wine production. It is believed to originally come either from Greece or Italy. It is a member of the Muscat family. It is a mid-budding and late-ripening grape variety with big bunches and berries. It is susceptible to powdery mildew (oidium) and botrytis bunch rot (grey mold), and is both heat and drought resistant. Muscat of Alexandria typically produces monovarietal wines but can be blended with different grape varieties. A classic blending partner is Moscato Bianco. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in stainless steel tanks.
