Gamay
Gamay is a black grape variety used for red and rosé wine production. It is believed to originally come from Burgundy (France). It is a grape variety that buds and ripens early, with small compact bunches and medium-sized berries. It is sensitive to sunburn and botrytis bunch rot (grey mold). Gamay typically produces monovarietal wines. However, it can be blended with Pinot Noir to produce red wines and with Cabernet Franc to produce rosé wines. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in stainless steel tanks, oak vats or oak barrels. Carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration is often practiced with Gamay.
