Carignan / Mazuelo
Carignan is a black grape variety used for red and rosé wine production. It is believed to originally come from Aragon (Spain). It is a late-budding and late-ripening grape variety with compact bunches of small to medium size and medium-sized berries. It is highly susceptible to powdery mildew (oidium). Carignan is typically used in blends with different grape varieties. Classic blending partners are Tempranillo and Grenache. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks, maturation – in oak barrels.
