Caroline Gilby
MASTER OF WINE (UNITED KINGDOM)
Dr. Caroline Gilby has a passion for the wines of Central & Eastern Europe. After abandoning a career in science to become a wine buyer, Eastern Europe was her first buying responsibility - hugely important in the late 1980s in the UK market. She passed her Master of Wine exams in 1992.
Caroline has followed Central & Eastern European wine since the beginning of the new era and has seen a complete revolution in winemaking. It’s gone from a mass market collectivised industry towards today’s huge variety of exciting and individual producers – at their best, wines that can stand with pride on the global wine stage.
Since 1995, Caroline has been freelance: she is panel chair at Decanter World Wine Awards and president of judging at Vinistra in Croatia. In July 2018, Caroline’s own book ‘The Wines of Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova’ was published.
Caroline also writes for a number of reference books including Oxford Companion to Wine, Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book, Tom Stevenson's Wine Report, Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopaedia (in production) and magazines including Decanter, Meininger's Wine Business International, Revija Vino and Harpers.
